Askeaton Community First Responders provide early medical first response across West Limerick and surrounding areas, supporting a population of approximately 30,000 people. We operate within a response area of roughly 707 square kilometres, centred on The Thatch Bar in Newbridge, County Limerick, which reflects the practical footprint of where our volunteers live and respond.
As a local volunteer group, Askeaton Community First Responders attend serious medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in the critical minutes before the National Ambulance Service arrives.
Areas of Response
Based in Askeaton, our responders regularly attend incidents across a wide section of West Limerick. We have responded to calls in Newcastle West, Shanagolden, Ardagh, Foynes, Rathkeale, Croagh, and Ballingarry, as well as many surrounding townlands throughout the area.
Our coverage overlaps with neighbouring Community First Responder groups. These overlaps are intentional and necessary in rural Ireland. Calls are dispatched based on proximity and availability rather than strict boundaries, helping ensure that the closest trained responder reaches the patient as quickly as possible.
Askeaton and the Wider Area
Askeaton has long been a regional centre in County Limerick. With its medieval origins, Desmond Castle, and Franciscan Friary, the town developed as an important administrative and trading hub. Today, it continues to serve as a central location for services, employment, and transport in West Limerick.
The wider area includes dispersed housing, small villages, and rural road networks, particularly toward the Shannon Estuary and the Foynes hinterland. In these settings, ambulance travel distances can be significant. Early intervention by a local Community First Responder can be critical while advanced medical care is en route.
Training and Community Partnership
Askeaton Community First Responders meet and train regularly at the Askeaton Community Centre, and we would like to thank the Askeaton Community Council for their continued support.
We also provide CPR and first aid training in West Limerick for community groups, sports clubs, and local businesses. Increasing local access to lifesaving skills is a core part of our role as a community-based emergency response group.
